For Macho Man XXI, Tania Pérez-Salas draws on her own experiences – experiences that got under her skin and which she has not completely processed yet. With a distinct sense of humour, Macho Man XXI tackles the effects of gender violence taking place in the chaotic, surreal and exotic Mexican culture. This gender conflict enrolled into a social legacy, nowadays is illustrated through the medias and their standards as well as through an underlying violence. Pérez-Salas’ piece plays with established conventions, perceptions of men/women and sexuality. It is rooted in fear, exhibiting a submissive, perverted state and a non-recognition of self.
