Sonia Destrie Lie’s performance NÊGO | WE ARE ALL BLACK deals with racial discrimination and inequality in Brazil. In the production, eight performers investigate the multiple meanings of the word "Nêgo", which can be used as a derogatory term, but also in an affectionate way. Originally, a derivative of the Portuguese word for black, "negro", it refers to the country’s afro-brazilian population whose identity has been profoundly shaped by African culture and life in the disadvantaged suburbs of Brazil’s megacities. A fusion of street dance and contemporary dance, the work recounts the performers’ personal encounters with racism and succeeds to catch the spirit of the country’s social movement that strives to change Brazil’s future for the better.
