Beauty of Accident

A 700-meter long rope and two bodies. It’s impossible for us to take our eyes off the rope as it flows incessantly and fascinatingly through four hands. It all looks so simple and so beautiful – and yet this is the result of a complex philosophical thought which lies at the base of the work of Anna Mesquita and Leandro Zappala. How does the way in which something is used influence those who are using it – and vice-versa? How do things act on us – and how do we act as a result of them? The two artists are questioning the relationship between people and their inanimate world, and the ambivalence inherent in freedom and the use of power. The answers are left to the audience. Reflection is the aim of the performance. And this does not lessen the pure pleasure to be derived from its aesthetic perfection and sensual intensity.
